Year In Review release announcement

Me ʻoukou ka welina o ke aloha,

In celebration of our first year together as a formal organization, Maui Grassroots Collective (MGC) developed a Year in Review to share the beautiful work, the achievements and the vision of this innovative collaboration.

In 2024, we came together to create MGC, where a hopeful seed was planted and watered in response to the limited community resources available for our vulnerable Maui Community. By embracing practices of sharing resources and responsibilities, we seek to restore the interconnectedness that has sustained Hawaiian communities for generations and for centuries. We seek to nurture and cultivate that sense of kuleana (responsibility) and understanding the value of that kuleana.

We invite you to learn more about our foundational year in this Year in Review.

MGC as a collective draw inspiration for our shared collaborative model from traditional land management practices that emphasize connection and sustainability while also being mindful of Maui’s history of longstanding collaborative pillars like J.W. Cameron and Maui Behavioral Health. In 2024, MGC worked diligently to obtain non-profit status to facilitate infrastructure for grassroots organizing and receive donations, grants and other funding contributions.

We’re honored to be guided by an intergenerational Board of Directors: Aunty Lei’ohu Ryder, Kawika Hoke, and Okali’i Kawaakoa for our foundational years, 2024 to 2025. Check out their feature on page 7. We’re dedicated to building a resilient and interconnected community rooted in values of pilina, kako’o and mālama.

You are part of this journey. You are part of the change. Thank you for your support along the way and your curiosity and energy for the future. Please share this Year in Review with people in your network who may be inspired to learn, connect, and support. Nui ka mahalo for your kokua and solidarity.

Naʻu me ke aloha, mahalo a ka haʻahaʻa na,

Maui Grassroots Collective
